Comprehensive structural assessment and load rating of an existing highway bridge for rehabilitation planning. Our assessment included visual inspection, material testing, load testing, and analytical modeling to determine the bridge's current capacity and recommend repair strategies.
The 45-year-old reinforced concrete bridge showed visible signs of distress including spalling concrete, exposed corroded reinforcement, and settlement at one abutment. The bridge needed to continue carrying traffic during assessment, and the client required a clear load rating for immediate posting decisions.
We conducted a phased assessment: Phase 1 visual inspection and condition mapping, Phase 2 material testing (concrete cores, carbonation depth, chloride profiling, rebar scanning), Phase 3 static load testing with calibrated analytical model. Load rating was performed per AASHTO LRFR methodology. Repair recommendations were prioritized by urgency and cost-effectiveness.
