Seismic retrofitting design for an existing garment factory to comply with updated building codes. The design included addition of steel braced frames, column jacketing, and roof diaphragm strengthening to achieve the required seismic performance level.
The existing single-story factory building was designed to older seismic codes and needed upgrading to comply with Myanmar's updated building regulations. The factory needed to remain operational during construction, limiting intervention options and requiring careful phasing.
We performed a seismic vulnerability assessment using nonlinear pushover analysis. The retrofit design added external steel braced frames at strategic locations, jacketed critical columns with steel angles and battens, and strengthened the roof diaphragm with steel rod cross-bracing. The phased construction plan allowed half the factory to operate while the other half was retrofitted.
